For quite some time now we have been trying to teach our daughter how to swim. But she is terrified to do so. She only wants to go in the water with her floaties on and if we take them off she will stay by the stairs. Of course we carry her into the water and try to show her but she holds on to us with a death grip!
She just refuses to learn to swim. My son learned quickly and loved being free from the floaties. Well this last week we learned that she can swim if she just hadn’t been scared to try.
Get The Floaties Off
Many times in life we too can be scared to learn or try something new. The biggest reason is that we are afraid to fail. In this case my daughter was afraid that she could not swim.
But last week, my wife took off her floaties so that she could play outside of the pool. Well, she eventually went down to the deep end and forgetting that she did not have her floaties on, jumped in.
My wife sprang to her feet and started running over, only to see my daughter emerge from the water, turn towards the side of the pool and swim to it. Like it was nothing! Almost like that is what she intended to do.
She of course cried after because it was not what she intended to do. But the point is that she knew how to swim. She did exactly what she was suppose to but was too afraid to do.
The point is that she thought she could not do something but was completely able.
So what are you using as floaties? What is it that you refuse to let go of to see if you will sink or swim? Sooner or later you’re going to have to jump. Or else you will be 40 yrs old wearing floaties in a pool!
It takes risks sometimes to be successful and to move on to the next level. Stop worrying about failure, when you fail you can be confident you will do better next time.
